Surfing in Westport WA

Westport is one of Washington’s most popular surf destinations, offering a range of breaks suitable for different skill levels, from beginner-friendly beach waves to powerful winter surf.  Here are some of the most popular places to surf in Westport.

The Groins

Located right across from the Saltwater Inn, you can surf the groins in Westport, Washington, which takes place at the Finger Jetties, also know as the groins, which are located at the mounth of the harbor. This spot offers both left and right waves and is best for intermediate surfers, with rides often breaking in front of the 4th jetty. The surf conditions are known for having strong rips and undertows, and surfers should also be aware of potential rocks. Parking is available behind the break wall, but it is important to be cautious of the conditions and be prepared for swift currents

The Jetty

“The Jetty” (also referred to as the Jetty / Corner break) is a prominent surf spot at the mouth of Grays Harbor, just seaward of the Westhaven State Park bluff in Westport, WA. On good days, the two long rock jetties flanking the harbor entrance help shape A-frame peaks over a sandy bottom, producing both lefts and rights that attract a mix of beginners and intermediate surfers. Because of the consistent nature of the break, The Jetty is often described as one of the most reliably surfable spots in Washington. A few tips for surfers:

  • The Jetty works best on swells from the southwest or west and with offshore winds from the northeast.
  • Because of rip currents, less experienced surfers are advised to stay about 50 yards south of the jetties to avoid strong outward pulls.
  • Parking for access is via Jetty Haul Road in Westhaven State Park (requires a Washington State Discovery Pass) and amenities at the park include restrooms and showers.

Westport - "The Cove" Surf Break

Westport's "The Cove" surf break is located at Half Moon Bay and is an advanced-level spot known for its powerful, often large winter swells. It is less frequently surfed today but offers a great vantage point to watch winter waves and can produce a quicker wave than the main jetty. The best conditions are typically found in winter, particularly March, with a clean surf forecast occurring about 54% of the time, while the break can be blown out more often than not.
